Math
This week in Ms. Olson and Ms. Tucker's math groups we started learning about symmetry in geometry. We learned about reflectional symmetry and rotational symmetry. On Monday we went outside and went on a scavenger hunt to try and find examples of symmetry in nature and in the real world. We also learned that symmetry is used a lot in indigenous, Metis, and Inuit art. We looked at a bunch of examples and now we are working to create our own symmetrical Art.
In Mr. Strother's group we started learning about ratios, percents and decimals. We went outside and got to calulate batting averages and other statistics using these skills!
ELA
Over the last couple of weeks in ELA we have been working on developing our reading comprehension strategies. We discussed inferences and how to use clues from the text and knowledge that we already have for our life experiences to make reasonable guesses about how a character is feeling, or what they might do. We learned it is also important to take the time to look back through the text when figuring our answers to make sure we aren't misremembering or missing any information.
Grade 5 Social
In social studies this week we started learning more about the impact of different groups on Canada's history. We learned that the North West Mounted Police were created after a deadly battle between some Assiniboine and some American Whiskey traders. We also learned about the contributions and the mistreatment of the Chinese immigrants who helped build the Canadian Pacific Railway. On Thursday, we learned about the how many Eastern Europeans including many Ukrainians came to Canada in the early 1900's in the Sifton Era. We also learned how the Ukrainian immigrants were treated greatly by the Canadian government during the WWI because they feared that they were on the side of the enemies.
Grade 6 Science
This week in science 6, we learned more about matter and the particle model. We conducted an experiment on freezing water to learn about how volume and mass are affected by phase changes. We also made our own thermometers to learn about thermal expansion and how thermometers work.
Grade 6 Social
This week in social 6, we learned about the five main political parties running in the upcoming election. Grades 4, 5, and 6 will be participating in the "Student Vote" program where students vote at polling stations in the school on election day. To prepare, grade 6s gathered information on major platform points for all the political parties to create posters that will help inform other students on key issues presented during the debate season.
